Enforcing proper law and order is the prime responsibility of every government. The Indian administrative system is a three tier system where administrative control flow from center to state and from state to district level. Unlike other cities, the collector or the district magistrate is the supreme body accountable for proper maintenance of law and administration in the city. However, there are several other senior officials who are appointed to support him in his responsibilities. Given below is the list of officials appointed to assist the district collector to administer the control of city.

2. Deputy Commissioner (Excise) in the cadre of District Revenue Officer.
3. District Revenue Officer( Stamps).
4. Personal Assistant (General) to the Collector of Chennai
5. Additional Personal Assistant to the Collector of Chennai
6. Personal Assistant (ULT) to the Collector of Chennai
7. Personal Assistant (Accounts) to the Collector of Chennai
8. Special Deputy Collector (Social Security Schemes) 
 9. Special Deputy Collector(Colour TV Schemes)   
10. Special Deputy Collector (Relief and Rehabilitation)
11.District Inspection Cell Officer. 
12. Manager TAHDCO in the cadre of Deputy Collector
13.District Adi Dravida & Tribal Welfare Officer
14. District Backward Classes & Minorities Welfare Officer
15.Personal Assistant (Survey) to the Collector of Chennai

District Revenue Officer is appointed as Additional District Magistrate.  The district is divided into five Taluks.  Following is the list of Deputy Collectors who are appointed as Sub-Divisional Magistrate for each taluk.

1.Personal Assistant (ULT) to the Collector
 Fort-Tondiarpet Taluk

2.Personal Assistant(General) to the Collector
Mylapore -Triplicane taluk.

3.Special Deputy Collector (PGRC)
Perambur-Purasawalkam Taluk

4.Additional Personal Assistant to the Collector
Mambalam-Guindy Taluk.

5.District Backward Classes and Minority Welfare Officer
Egmore-Nungambakkam Taluk.

The Commissioner of Police is appointed to look after for maintenance of Law and Order in the city, to stop the piracy of movies with the application of Cinematograph Act, and stop the misuse of weapons by properly applying the Explosives Act. 

However, the Civil Supplies and essential commodities Act is taken care by the respective Assistant Commissioners (Civil Supplies). They work under the control of the Commissioner of Civil Supplies. Therefore they are not required to report to the collector.

Apart from this the infrastructure development of the city is looked by the Commissioner of Corporation of Chennai .
