Introduction
Chennai the capital of Tamil Nadu is not only the oldest city of Tamil Nadu, but of the whole India. With the total geographic area of 178.20 square kilometers, the city of Chennai is located at 1209' and 1309' of the northern latitude and 80012' and 80019' of the southern longitude.
At present Chennai is considered as one of the metro city of India. The city runs on double track of preserving the historical and cultural value of Indian civilization at one hand, and on the other adopts the current technical developments with the same ease. The city represents the south Indian architecture, music, drama, dance, sculpture and other arts and crafts.
Going back to history, the city is known as the gateway of British Rule in South Indian States in the 17th century, when East India Company established at Fort Saint George as its main commercial hub. The impact of British rule can still be seen in the institution and administration of chennai city. However, within the period of 350 years after the British rule the major villages such as Mylapore, Triplicane and Chennai Patnam have now emerged as the new metropolitan cities, and that also without forgetting its traditions and religious values. Chennai being the capital of state is also the political hub of all the major parties in Tamil Nadu. However, the politics of the state lies in the hands of the regional parties. The major parties in Chennai are All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bhaujan Samaj Party, Bhartiya Janta Party, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Desia Murpooku Dravida Kazhagam, Indian National Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Pattali Makkal Katchi.
It is noteworthy to mention here that political scenario in the state of Tamil Nadu is influenced by the regional parties mainly by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The other parties including the major political parties i.e., Indian National Congress and Bhartiya Janta Party have their presence in the state. In every election these parties have to depend on alliance with these two regional parties.
At present Honorable Shri. M. Karunanidhi of DMK is the chief-minister of the state. Honorable Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala is the Governor of the state.
