Unlike other Indian States, in Tamil Nadu also, Governor is the head of the state appointed by the President of India. The council of ministers is headed by the Chief Minister who is also the leader of the majority party. At Present Honorable Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala is the Governor of the state, and Honorable. Shri. M. Karunanidhi is the Governor of the State.

Tamil Nadu is among few Indian States where regional parties dominate the politics of the state. The major political parties in the state are AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party), BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party), CPI (Communist Party of India), CPIM (Communist Party of India, Marxist), DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), DMDK (Desia Murpooku Dravida Kazhagam),  INC (Indian National Congress), MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and  (Pattali Makkal Katchi).

At present the state is headed by the DMK and its alliance which came into existence in the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2006. Honorable Shri. M. Karunanidhi is the Chief Minister of the state. Mr. R Avudaiappan is the speaker of the Vidha Sabha or legislative assembly. The administration of state is divided in 32 districts, divided in 234 Legislative assembly constituencies. The state has also its representation in both the houses of Parliament i.e. in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The state is represented by 18 members in Rajya Sabha and in Lok Sabha by 39 members. However, the following council of ministers are appointed to help the chief minister in the proper administration of the state.
