Chennai Film Industry
Chennai film industry,popularly known as " kollywood" is the second largest film industry in India in terms of revenues and distribution world wide. It is based in capital city, Chennai and located in Kodambakkam district, basically a tamil language industry.In the region there is a good number of film studios.
After the entertainment Tax Act in 1939,Chennai has become the hub of not only for Tamil Nadu film industry but also for Telugu,Malyalam,Kannada,Hindi and Srilankan Cinema.Later on the Tamil languages film started to produce and made from other countries also.The Tamil Film industry enjoys the widest visibility of any regional South Asian cinema. Many of Indian cinema's popular figures had made their debut in Tamil films.One of the most unique features of Tamil cinema is the way the films developes and utilizes among local audiences.
The history of Tamil cinema can be divided into two eras: Tamil cinema from 1950-70 and Tamil cinema from 1970 to the present day.The making of films were also been changed with the decades along with the new and advanced technologies.A variety in film making can be seen as per it is only be depends on the mood of local audiences and culture,there are commercial films to entertain audiences, serious films are also being filmed to educate the masses while entertaining them.It can never be a step behind by doing the experiments in film making with new technology.A gifted and natural group of music directors, cinematographer, choreographers and others have made the Tamil film industry grow.
Eras in terms of Tamil Film Actors:
Tamil Cinema always been a male oreinted industry.Earlier it was dominated by P. U. Chinnappa and M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar during the 1940s.From the 1950s through the 1970s,the industry was dominated by M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan.From the 1980s till date, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, have maintained a strong grip on the box office despite the introduction of new technologies and business models.
MGR Film city:
The MGR Film City is a special delight and most popular location for Chennai's flourishing Tamil Film Industry,situated at Taramani, Adyar, the film city is dedicated to the memory of the famous Tamil actor MG Ramachandran and was inaugurated in 1990.Several sets of artificial sceneries like forest, water falls, market place etc, are built here to serve as background for the shooting of films. MGR Film City is the only institution of its kind to be maintained by the government and providing free public access.
