Providing better health services to citizens is the prime responsibility of every government. Therefore from time to time various health programmes are initiated by the government to look after the health of its citizens. Following paragraphs detail the information of various health programmes implemented by the government of Chennai.
Revised Tuberculosis Control Programme• RNTCP was launched in Chennai City on 24.3.1999. Under this programme 14 Microscopic Centres have been established for detection of sputum positive cases and treatment under DOTS.
• Treatment and Drugs are made available at all Corporation Dispensaries, Family Welfare Centres, and Government Hospitals.
• So far more than 9000 cases are detailed and put on treatment.
• Cases of co-infection of T.B and AIDS are also taken care and all the medical and paramedical personnel were given adequate training.
• Other Govt. and private medical institutions are also involved in this scheme.
• IEC activities are strengthened by preparing Posters, Phamplets and Stickers.

HIV / AIDS Control ProgrammeA Chennai AIDS preventive and control society has been established with World Bank assistance on 10.4.1999 and following components are taken care.
• Blood safety
• Targeted Intervention
• Low cost AIDS care
• Awareness among high risk group
• STI / RTI treatment
• NGO'S and Private Medical Institutions are also involved in this programme.
Family Health Awareness Campaign
• Family Health awareness Campaigns are conducted periodically to detect STI / RTI Cases, who are more prone to get HIV infection.
• People with signs and symptoms of vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, Genital ulcer, burning on maturation and inguinal swelling are examined.
• Separate camps are conducted for male and female. Counseling is done.
• Mobile Camps are also organized at 10 Zones and cases are referred, besides Counseling.
School Health Programme• There are 322 Schools run by Corporation of Chennai where in 1, 30,000 Children are studying.
• All these children are examined once in a year and treated for minor ailments and chronic diseases are identified and students are referred to the concerned specialties for treatment.

An amount of Rs.15 lakhs is spent towards purchase of drugs for this scheme.
Slum Health Programme• There are about 1240 slums in Chennai where in 14 lakhs people are residing. Due to lack of sufficient basic facilities the slum dwellers are prone for all communicable diseases.
• The Health Department is conducting a slum health programme regularly once in a week to cover each slum.
• A Health team headed by a Medical Officer and Para Medical staff visit the slums and examine the slum dwellers for minor ailments.
• IEC activities are also undertaken to create awareness among the slum dwellers about prevention of communicable diseases and environmental sanitation.
