Chennai previously known as Madras is one of the four metropolises of India located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The capital of Tamil Nadu, it is the largest city of southern India. The city derives its name from the small fishing village of Chennai where the British East India Company had established a fort and trading post. Over the years, the city has retained its traditional Tamil Hindu culture and effectively blended with the foreign influence.
Chennai is a major trade center, being well linked by road, rail and air to important cities besides being a sea port. Compared to the other major metros of India, it is far less congested and polluted.
Chennai is an industrial hub of South India and also an important destination for higher education. The important institutions include Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT) Madras, Madras University, Anna University, Presidency College, and Loyola College. It also provides ample opportunities in cultural development, sports, entertainment, travel and tourism.
