Museums in Chennai
Museums can be defined as the place or building having the collection of items of historical value preserved to keep them safe for centuries. These items be antique items of cultural heritage and can be related to education material, scientific material, traditional weapons, dead bodies in form of mummy’s etc.
Chennai holds the pride of placing itself as a metropolitan city of India offering the most developed facilities to the people. Chennai the capital of Tamil Nadu is also known as ‘Gateway to South’. Basically the entire state of Tamil Nadu offers an open museum to every one visiting the any corner of state. However, there are two famous museums located in city of Chennai. Government Museum Chennai: Government museum of Chennai is the house of antique items of historical importance. People across the whole world visit the museum through out the year. The museum is divided into different departments namely Archeology Department, Art Department, Anthropology Department, Numismatics, Zoology and Chemical. All these departments have collection of antique pieces of their concerned importance. The government museum of Chennai is the best place for the scholars of anthropology.
The museum has an extra ordinary collection of various painting made up by oil, graphics and contemporary art forms. These painting exhibit the mythological events, and also the progress of human civilization at different stages.

Vivekananda Museum in Chennai: The museum is regarded as an asset of Tamil Nadu. Situated in Chennai the museum is located in the famous Ice house which at one time was used as storage place of Ice. It is said the place was so cool that Ice did not melt though temperature was very high outside.
Swami Vivekananda gave his teachings here to his followers and therefore the Ice house was converted into Vivekananda museum in the coming years.

Fort Museum : The Fort St. George museum was established on January 31, 1948. The museum has ten rooms exhibiting the evidences of Indian History in form of uniforms, coins, padlocks, old prints and palanquins. The banquet hall located at the first floor has the collection of painting of the governors and officials in India during British rule.
