The rapid increase in the population has resulted the expansion of the geographical boundaries of the city and also raised the traffic volume on the roads. The city of Chennai is not an exception to this problem. Recognized as the “Gateway to South” the city of Chennai also felt the need of introducing the Metro Train System in the city to cope with the problem of increasing traffic on the roads. With an objective of providing fast, reliable, convenient, efficient, modern and economical means of transport to the public.
The Government of Tamil Nadu initiated a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing the Chennai Metro Rail Project. This SPV was called as “Chennai Metro Rail Limited” and came into existence on December 3, 2007, under the Companies Act. The project is being operated under the joint venture of Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to suggest and design the implementation of Metro Train Project in the city of Chennai. DMRC has successfully drafted and implemented the Delhi Metro Rail Project in Delhi. The DPR has projected the formation of two corridors under the phase I of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, which is shown as below:
