Railways in Chennai

Identified as the “Gateway of the South”, the Chennai Railway Station is also the headquarters of the Southern Railway. Southern Railways came into existence on April 14, 1951, holds the pride of being the first railway zone of the Independent India. It was constituted by merging the three state railways namely Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore state railway.

At present the Southern Railways network is expanded to Southern part of India covering the states Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry,and a small portion of Andhra Pradesh. Besides this the Southern Railways also connects  Mangalore on the west coast and Kanniyakumari in the south to Renigunta in the North West and Gudur in the North East.

The central administrative body i.e. the Southern Railway has six divisions under its control:

1. Chennai
2. Tiruchirapalli
3. Madurai
4. Palghat
5. Trivandrum
6. Salem

However, there are two railways stations in the Chennai, known as Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. The Chennai Central connects the city with all the major cities of India through its network of 11 platforms catering the trains of long distance, with this it also has 6 platforms designed especially for suburban trains. The Chennai Egmore connects the trains from Chennai to other parts of the Tamil Nadu.
