Electricity

 Tamil Nadu has its own glorious story of becoming a successful electricity empowerment state in India.Similar to the other states,in early years the state has only some few electricity plants with a limitation on electricity generation but after the creation of  "The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board" with effect from 1st July 1957,electricity & power sector has gained the real momentum and the generation capacity,transmission network and distribution grew.

The Government of India has planned to give “Power for all by 2012”. To achieve this, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is making progress in Generation, Transmission and Distribution sector. TNEB has completed the electrification of all villages and towns in the state  and is also progressing towards electrification of all households.

Tamil Nadu Electricity board(TNEB) reorganized by the name TNEB Ltd with two subsidiary companies, namely Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) shall be fully owned by the Tamil Nadu Govt.

Milestones in Development of TNEB Ltd

• First cascading hydro-electric scheme – Kundah in the Nilgiris (1957-1964)
  
• First Barrage type Power House (1987-1989)
  
• Kadamparai Pumped Storage Hydro Electric station ( 4 x100 MW) (1986-1987)
  
• First Gas Insulated Substation (1998)
  
• Commissioning of 230 KV Transmission line (1960)

SCADA project

       SCADA (Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition System) of Chennai Distribution Control Centre is the first in the country and it remotely controls 95 distribution substations in Chennai City.

• Power line Carrier Communication (PLCC) in Grid Operation
• First state to achieve 100 % Village Electrification

    
 Today TNEB has grown into a giant organization having a installed capacity of 10,122 MW and serving a consumer base of about 2 crore consumers.The state also has installations in renewable energy sources like windmill, Bios mass and Cogeneration up to 5586 MW. As of now, the total installed capacity in Tamil Nadu is 15800 MW.

The responsibility of board is not limited only  in availing electric power to the consumers but also shoulders the responsibility of looking after the consumer complaints and improved services to the consumers, establishing new sub stations and also looking after the demand and making the uninterrupted supply to the consumers.
