Like other regions of India, till middle of 19th century Chennai too was not fully equipped and developed in concern of water and sewerage system .The district was dependent on shallow wells situated in own houses of people or on public wells and tanks in the neighbourhood for their water supply needs. There was no protected water supply at that time and these sources were not satisfactory.
In 1978 under Tamil Nadu Act 28,Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board an Independent Institution has been established and commenced services itself and from then the system was working promptly and successfully till yet.
The administration of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is governed by the Board consisting of Board of Directors, headed by Managing Director. The policies and directions of the Board are carried out through the Managing Director.
