Libraries in Chennai

Anna Centenary Library in Chennai:

Anna Centenary Library in ChennaiThe Anna Centenary Library covers wide range of subjects through its huge collection of books. This has largely succeeded in enhancing the popularity of this library. 

The government of Tamil Nadu renders a certain financial assistance each year towards the maintenance of this library. 

Around 172 crores (INR) have been spent towards establishing the Anna Centenary Library situated in Kottupuram (Chennai).

Amongst all the Tamil libraries in this state, the ACL is one of the biggest nests of book lovers. Regulations laid down by M Karunanidhi are governing the ACL ever since its inception; it owes its name to C. N Annadurai, the former CM of Tamil Nadu.

Adyar Library in Chennai:

Adyar Library in ChennaiIn 1886, Colonel Olcott had founded the Adyar Library and Research Centre. This library shows you through a nice and rare collection of the books written by its founder. 

In order to meet the growing needs of readers, the library was shifted to a bigger space in 1968 from its original headquarters.

From places like China, Indian and Sri Lanka some 20,000 manuscripts made with palm leaves and printed volumes worth 250,000 were retrieved. Visitors are allowed to check a few of these pieces within the library.

Besides a great collection of cultural, philosophical and religious works, some indo-logical publications that are considered rare have also been printed. 

This library in Chennai holds some precious possessions in terms of key research journal sets, pieces of rare western and latin works, the Tanjur and Kanjur from Tibet, and the Chinese Tripitakas.

Connemara Public Library in Chennai:

Connemara Public Library in ChennaiIn December 5, 1896, the Connemara Public Library was founded within the premises of the Pantheon complex in Egmore (Chennai).

Amongst the four National Depository Libraries in India, this library holds identify as the recipient of a single copy of all published periodicals, newspapers and books.

The journals and books that lie within its collections are often not found in good condition due to their age. 

Some of them are over a hundred years old. These books would certainly pose a great source of knowledge for all researchers, although they may show a few signs of repairs.

Roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai:

In 1994, the Roja Muthiah Research library was founded with its treasure of Tamil culture and print heritage. The primary objective of this library is to enlarge the collective works of Roja Muthiah Chettiyar and protect them.

Roja had collected finest pieces of Tamil publications throughout his life, and turned himself into a notable Tamil private collector.

A few of his records exist since the beginning of eighteenth century. A few eminent Tamil scholars have access to his research materials and other facilities associated with his library; some 250000 items have been found amongst his collections.

Amongst a variety of South Asian collections constituting Tamil works, Roja’s collections have established a unique place due to their outstanding class and quality.
