Places to Shop in Chennai

Cotton Street, Pantheon Road, Egmore:
Cotton is the most preferred fabric, keeping in mind the weather of Chennai. Pastels, bright florals, rich mahogany and pristine whites, colours and patterns here are wide in range. 

Fabrics for upholstery, table cloths etc all are available here. Bargain is one skill need to be carried with you when in Cotton Street.

George Town:
George Town is another street shopping option. This is the area around the first British fortress in India, Fort St. George. During 1950’s a north Indian community called ‘Marwaris’ settled in this area. 

Audiappa Naicken Street is for electronic products, Deva raja Mundali Street is for tailoring accessories, Nainiappa Naiken Street is for medicinal herbs, Mint street is to take a break from your shopping and enjoying best Badam milk of Chennai.

Ranganathan Street:
This  street is known for its hustle and bustle. The roads are narrow and often packed with the shoppers, you get wide variety of goods for sale here it is a busiest street of Chennai. There are rows of textile shops which are interrupted by ‘imitation goods’ (as it reads) or fancy goods.

The former name of Anna Salai was Mount Road. There are many large stores all lined up occupying the stretch of around 8 Kms. You can get South Indian delicacies, jewellery and lot more in this market.

Located on Usman Road and Ranganathan Street, this market is known for jewellery and Silk Sarees.

T Nagar:
Thyagaraya Nagar or T Nagar

Anna Nagar:
This market is located on the west side of Chennai and is better known for branded shops.

Moore Market:
Once a legendry treasure of second hand books was razed down by fire in the year 1985 and the building now sells meat, electronic gadgets, pet supplies and poultry. 

However people still come here to buy books as there are many small book stores offering novels, comics and even prated books. You have to be patient and dig in the shops to find the real gem in best price.

Nalli
Kanchipuarm silk saree is a must buy in Chennai. Although many stores sells Kanchipuram silk sarees but buying it from Nalli has become a tradition even for localities. 

Nalliwas established in 1928 by a famous weaver of silk kanchipuram sarees, Nalli Chinnasamy Chetti. They offer unquestionable quality and unparalleled handwork but follow a no discount policy.

Cholamandal Artists’ Village:
This is the first of its kind in India and probably the largest. This artists’ commune was established in 1966 by K.C.S Paniker (Artist). 

He fostered and envisaged the movement in India, ‘The Madras movement’ in the year 1950. This brought modernism to art. Artists’ became a self supporting community, through the sale of its work.

The buyers slowly got familiarized with modern art. CCCA (Cholamandel Centre for Contemporary Art was opened in the village in Feb. 2009.

This centre has a museum displaying the work of great artists of the famous Madras movement. Laburnum and Indigo are two commercial galleries. There is a craft shop, a garden and a guest house. There is a cafe’ run by an Iranian family- Shiraz Cafe.
