Crocodile Bank In ChennaiThe Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Center for Herpetology is one of the world’s biggest reptiles’ zoo with the largest collection of crocodiles, alligators and its other endangered species of reptiles.

It is also a herpetology research center which is one of the oldest environmental institutions in Asia, run by a non-governmental organization. 

The center is spread over a huge area of 8.5 acres of land that is located around 45 kms south of Chennai.

The zoo is easily accessible via road. There are many buses, autos and taxis frequently available to and from the city.

The Croco Bank, as it is popularly named as, is home to over 2500 different varieties of reptiles. Originally designed as a genetic repository of reptiles, now it has turned out to be a world renowned public institution with strong government support.

The Croco Bank also runs a captive breeding program for the rare species of gharials, snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles and other reptiles, other than only crocodiles. It has also got provisions for snake venom extraction facilities in its premises.

 There are huge breeding colonies for water birds and also a safe nesting coast built for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.
