Malaysian Embassy in Chennai

The Malaysian Embassy in Chennai or the Consulate General of Malaysia originated in 1961. The Consulate General of Malaysia was established in Chennai for entire South India. Malaysia gained independence in 1957 and the Malaysian Embassy in Chennai was one of its first diplomatic missions abroad.

Malaysian ConsulateThe Malaysian Embassy in Chennai was originally created as the “Office of the Assistant High Commissioner for Malaysia in Chennai”.  In time, there was a need felt to increase the function and role of the diplomatic mission in response to the greater interests of Malaysia in Southern India. Thus, the Malaysian government upgraded their office to that of Consulate General of Malaysia for Southern India in Chennai and announced the same on 8 November, 2004 through the Ministry of External Affairs notification.

The Ladies Association of the Malaysian Embassy in Chennai is known as PERWAKILAN, Chennai – an acronym for Persatuan Wanita Kementerian Luar Negeri translated as “Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ladies Association”.

How to Apply for Visa to Malaysia in Chennai:

Visa to Malaysia from ChennaiThere are two Visa categories:

  • Visa with Reference: This is approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Department of Immigration in Malaysia. It is intended for the purpose of studying, working or social visits for more time than given for visa without reference.

  • Visa without Reference: This is approved by the Consulate General of Malaysia for business, social or tourist visits.

Important Documents for Malaysian Visa Applications:

Here are the important documents which are required while applying for Malaysian Visa in Chennai:

  • Completed visa application form filled in capital letters.

  • Passport in original as well as photocopy of Bio page and the last page.

  • The passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival in Malaysia.

  • 2 recent photos with required photo specifications

  • Covering letter

  • Confirmed return air ticket (in original and a photocopy) with ticket number and flight details. The return air tickets needs to be confirmed by the Airlines.

  • Applicants who hold a recent/fresh passport or are travelling for the first time have to submit photocopy of the last three months of bank statement along with bank stamp.

In addition to all this, three complete blank pages within the passport are mandatory requirements for the Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai for the purpose of visa stamping and approval. In case one does not have the three blank pages to which visa needs to be affixed, one has to provide for a new passport.

Once you have submitted your visa application form with required documents, you can track its status online and collect your passport from the VFS visa application center or wait for a courier delivery.
