Wildlife Sanctuaries and Zoos in Chennai

Zoos and wildlife sanctuaries are nowadays a great source of entertainment as well as learning. Chennai is home to some of the famous zoological parks in the country. 

They are reserved areas, run by non-profit organization with the sole purpose of providing conservation to wild species and their habitats. These wildlife parks attract millions of visitors yearly, they come to see the interesting animals and also for educational opportunities.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park

Anna Zoological Park in ChennaiArignar Anna Zoological Park is one of the largest and scientifically managed zoos of the country. 

This modern day zoo is home for hundreds of wild species, flora and fauna, endangered species, including the white tiger, ostriches, deer, lions and elephants.

  • Timings: 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. (Closed on Tuesday)

Vandalur Zoo

The Vandalur Zoo is located in Vandalur around 32 kms towards the southwestern part of Chennai. The zoo provides battery-operated cars, diesel-run road rails, rental bicycles and long tree-lined paved walkways for its numerous visitors. 

The lion and the tiger safaris are a must-go entertainer out there. The other star attractions include the Deer Safari Park, Ostrich enclosure, Shark Model Aquarium, Butterfly House, Cave Model water fall entrance etc.

The zoo is well-maintained, neat and spacious and a worthy tourist location.

There is also an Animal Adoption Program here, which allows the public to adopt any animal species for any number of days or months.

Guindy National Park

Guindy National Park in ChennaiThis is another national park located at the heart of the city. It is home of different species of deer and an exotic range of birds and snakes.

The main advantage of visiting this park is that it is within city limits, therefore easily approachable and considered an ideal weekend getaway with family. Read  more

Guindy Snake Park

Guindy Snake Park in ChennaiThe Guindy Snake Park, it is located within the Guindy National Park campus and next to the Children's Park. The park is home to wide species of snakes such as pythons, vipers, cobras and other reptiles.

Also, like the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, there are provisions for captive breeding of endangered species of snakes and crocodiles out here. 

They interpret the process of venom extraction and give demo on the local snake stuffs. The show timings are at 10.00 AM, 1PM, 3 PM and 4.30 PM every day.

Madras Crocodile Bank


Croco Bank in ChennaiThe Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Center for Herpetology, or the CrocoBank is a reptiles’ zoo with one of the world’s largest collection of crocodiles, alligators and its endangered species. As the name suggests,  it is also a herpetology research center.

It is located around 40 kms from Chennai. This major crocodile breeding center has now turned into a holiday entertainer for the people in Chennai.

Along with crocodile breeding, it also has provisions for snake breeding and venom extraction facilities. The CrocoBank runs a captive breeding program for the rare species of snakes, turtles and reptiles. 

It is an incredible view to see thousands of crocodiles lying together silently in the water banks. One can witness so many crocodiles at one place.
