Localities in Chennai

Chennai is divided into major areas like north, south West and Central Chennai.


Each of these areas has many important localities in them.

Central Chennai

Central area of Chennai is the most important commercial hub as there are famous business houses and offices located in this area. Many foreign and nationalized banks, hospitals, shopping plazas and institutes are also located in this region. 

Many tourist places like St. George Fort, Government Museum, Aamir Mahal, Parthasarathy Temple and many other monuments constructed during Colonial Era. George Town, Egmore, Triplicane, Royapettah etc. are some of the important localities of Chennai.

Egmore

Egmore is located in the near proximity of center of Chennai City. Egmore Railway Station is one of the busiest railway stations of Chennai.  Madras Eye Hospitals, Hotel Taj Connemara, Corporation Stadium, Women’s Christians College, Wellington Club are located at Egmore. National Art Gallery and St. Andrew’s Church are some other tourist spots of Egmore.

George Town

Located in the eastern parts of the city, George Town is another important commercial hub of Chennai City. The important institutes and establishments of George Town are Crown Cinema, Chennai College, Government Dental College.

Important tourist spots of George Town are St. George Fort, St. Mary’s Church, and Kandaswamy Temple. Chennai Airport is located about 16 KM away from George Town.

Royapettah

Located at the centermost part of Chennai, Royapettah lies on the western side of Marina Beach. Many important business centers are established at Royapettah. Renowned hospitals, educational institutes, movie halls, tourist spots and hotels are located here. 

The nearest railway station is the Light House Station and the Chennai Airport is only 10 KM from here. Royapettah is very close to the famous road, Kamraj Salai Road.

North Chennai

Northern region of Chennai houses important commercial and trade centers. It is very close to the Bay of Bengal and is connected to other important areas of Chennai City through rail and road links. 

The popular localities of north Chennai are Perambur, Anna Nagar and Tondiarpet.  Perambur, a place famous for production of automobiles, is nicknamed as “Detroit of India”.

Anna Nagar

Located in the western part of Chennai City, Anna Nagar is a residential area. It is one of the most expensive places of Chennai and is growing very fast. 

Many important educational and commercial centers are located here. Visweswararya Town Park, Sridevi Hospital, K.H.M Hospital, Hotels like Beverly Hotel, Sudha Inn etc.



Many IT Companies like Astra Infotech, Eco Tech Software Pvt. Ltd, Pegasus Software are also located in this area.

Tondiarpet

Tondiarpet is located in the outskirts of Chennai in the northern area and very close to the Bay of Bengal. It shares the boundary with George Town, a region in the center of Chennai. 

Tondiarpet is well connected to the rest of Chennai through rail and road links. It has the zonal office of Chennai Municipal Corporation and many other commercial centers.

The fishing harbor is also located here. The nearest railway station is the Tondiarpet Railway Station.

South Chennai

South region of Chennai city has many pilgrimage places and historical spots. This area also has many important commercial centers and residential centers. Southern Region of Chennai is also known as the entry point of south India. 

Chennai Airport that is located at Meenambakkam is also in this southern part of Chennai.The important road Rajib Gandhi Salai is also originated from here.

Adyar

Located on the southern shores of River Adyar, it is one of the largest neighborhoods of southern Chennai. The mainland of Adyar gets traversed by a canal, Buckhingam Canal. Many river, forest, commercial centers, tourist spots are located in Adyar. 

 Dr. Muthulaxmi Road and Sardar Patel Road connect Adyar to other parts of Chennai. Guindy Railway station is the nearest railway station of Adyar.



Hotels like Nilgiri Hotel, Hotel Buena Vista and Woodlands Hotel are also located at Adyar. The Old Mahabalipuram Road also known as Rajib Gandhi Salai or IT Corridor starts from Adyar. 

This road is known as one of the important roads of suburban area of Chennai and starts from Madhya Kailash Temple located at Adyar. 

The road continues to Mahabalipuram located in the Kanchipuran District and gets merged with East Coast Road. This six lane road is known as the State Highway No. 49A.

Mylapore

Mylapore is known for its religious and cultural significance and is a place near the coasts of Bay of Bengal. Formerly it was known as Vedapuri. The place is associated with many legendary tales.

Numerous temples, mosques, churches and other religious shrines make Mylapore an ideal pilgrimage place for all religions.

 Important places to visit in Mylapore are Kapaleeswarar Temple, Sri Vedantha Desikar Devasthana, and Temple of Kesava Perumal. Mylapore is famous for shopping places.



Nilgiris is a famous departmental store of Mylapore. Important exhibitions and fairs are held at the Sankara Hall located at Mylapore. 

Other places of interest are Ramakrishna Math, Luz Church, and Madras Music Academy. Important Hotels like Savera Hotel, Murudi’s Lodges, Nilgiri’s Nest are also located at Mylapore.

Alwarpet

Alwarpet is part of Mylapore locality. Alwarpet is famous for its two residential hubs- The Poes Garden and the Boat Club. It has a huge shopping complex and famous restaurants like The Mainland China, The Duchess, The Banana Leaf and others. 

The shopping centers of Alwarpet are situated on T.T.K Road. Famous hotels like Chola Sheraton, The Park Sheraton, and the Woodlands Hotels are also located here. 

Many Music and Art academies like Carnatic Music School, CP Arts Center, Narada Ghana Sabha are located at Alwarpet.

West Chennai

Western part of Chennai has many residential areas and as compared to other parts of Chennai, it has lesser crowd. West Chennai has some of the best residential establishments. Many beautiful and posh townships are located in the west Chennai. 

Important schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels and other commercial centers are here. Important localities of West Chennai are Vadapalani, Ambattur, and Kilpauk.

Ambattur

Ambattur is an important industrial area located in the north western part of Chennai. Ambattur is about 13 KM away from central Chennai. Many important companies like Dell, TCS, and HCL have set up their development centers within Ambattur Industrial Estate. 

Chennai-Tiruvallur Highway connects Ambattur to other places of Chennai. The nearest railway station is Ambattur station and Chennai Airport is about 12 KM from here in the south.

Kilpauk

Kilpauk is a small township which is famous for its commercial significance. It is located very close to the areas like Anna Nagar, Egmore, and Chetpet. From Chennai Central, Kilpauk is only 6 KM away.

Many companies dealing in cement export, chemical, woodwork and packaging materials have their offices and workshops here at Kilpauk. 

Important hotels in this area are Guru Regency, Breeze hotel, and Hotel King’s Park. The place is connected to rest of Chennai through road and rail. Chennai Airport is about 10 KM from here.
