Buses are the primary mode of transport in the metropolitan city. The Pallavan Transport Corporation was created on 1 January 1972 to serve Madras city, now known as Chennai.Pallavan Transport Corporation was bifurcated into Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation Limited for northern Madras and Pallavan Transport Corporation Limited for southern Madras in the year 1994.
The two were reunited in 2001 to form the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The bus service plies about 3,257 buses on 622 routes. Around 4.35 million passengers travel on several routes on a daily basis in the city.
Several types of buses ply on the road including air-conditioned or deluxe express buses but the tickets are still cheap when compared to other cities or countries.
The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) is located in Koyambedu area. It is one of the largest bus stations in Asia. CMBT is the first boarding point for State transport and private bus services, which commute to all major cities, towns in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states.
